On the 6 of March of 2018, the ship Maersk Honam caught on fire while on route to the Suez Canal.
In the moment of the fire, the ship was carrying 7860 containers. Customers that have been affected have been contacted directly, but up to today, they haven´t been able to recover the cargo. In this cases, the shipping line can ask the customers whose cargo has not been affected to contribute towards the loss and rescue. The amount to be paid is determined by cargo value and customers would have to pay around 50 % of the value of the cargo.
This type of disaster are not very common but they can resume in serious extra cost for a company, for this reason, it is very important to hire a good international insurance and know all about its clauses. This way we make sure that the product we are hiring, fits our needs perfectly.
